Create a course

Build a course from modules and lessons, add quiz questions, and publish it for your team.

Courses live under Learn in Jasper's web app. A course is made of modules, each module holds lessons, and a lesson can end with quiz questions. You can also ask people to sign off that they have read a policy. Courses are on every plan. Owners and admins can build courses by default.

1. Create the course

  1. Open Learn, then Manage Courses.
  2. Click New course.
  3. Fill in the Title, Summary and Description. You can add a Cover image (up to 4 MB) and Estimated minutes.
  4. For a policy, tick Requires acknowledgement / sign-off and write the Acknowledgement statement. The statement is required: the course won't save without one.
  5. To make people redo the course every so often, choose a Re-certification period: Monthly, Quarterly, Annually or Custom (days).
  6. Click Create course. New courses start as drafts.

2. Add modules and lessons

  1. On the course's Structure tab, type a name in New module title and click Add module.
  2. In the module, click + Lesson.
  3. Give the lesson a Title and pick a Content type: Rich Text, Uploaded Video, Embedded Video, PDF, Image or External URL.
  4. Add the URL or upload the file (up to 500 MB), plus any Attachments (optional).
  5. Click Save lesson.

Use the up and down arrows to reorder modules and lessons.

3. Write lessons in the block studio

Click Studio on a lesson to build it from blocks. Changes save as you go.

  1. Click + Add block and choose Rich Text, Image, Video, Embed, File or Question.
  2. Drag blocks to reorder them, or use the arrows.
  3. Click Preview as learner to see the lesson as your team will.

4. Add a quiz

A lesson becomes a quiz when you add a Question block to it.

  1. In the studio, add a Question block.
  2. Write the Question prompt and choose Single Choice, Multiple Choice or True / False.
  3. Add the options with + Add option and mark the correct ones. You can add an explanation that learners see after they submit.
  4. Under Quiz settings, set the Pass mark (%). Tick Shuffle questions for each learner if you want a different order for each person. If you don't see Quiz settings after adding your first Question block, reload the studio.

Always set a pass mark. The hint says a blank pass mark means every question must be correct, but today a blank pass mark lets any submission pass. Learners can retake a quiz as many times as they like.

5. Publish

  1. Click Preview as learner to check the whole course.
  2. Click Publish. A course needs at least one module, and every question needs a valid answer.

When you change a published course, click Re-publish and choose how big the change is:

  • Minor change: typos and wording. Completions and sign-offs stay as they are.
  • Material change: the version moves on. People who already finished keep their record.
  • Material change — everyone must redo: everyone who completed an earlier version has to work through it again and sign off again. Lessons that have not changed since they finished stay complete. The first time a course published before this change is re-published as a material change, everyone redoes it once, because older versions don't record which lessons changed.

You can also Unpublish or Archive a course.

What learners see

Learners open Learn, then My Learning, with tabs for Assigned, In progress and Complete, and a Course Catalogue of every published course they can enrol in. In a lesson they click Mark complete & continue. A quiz shows "Passed" or "Not passed" with the score. A course that needs sign-off ends with an Acknowledge & complete button, which Jasper records with the statement, version, time and IP address.

Limits

  • Courses are in the web app only, not the desktop app.
  • There is no limit on quiz attempts that you can set.
  • If a course needs sign-off, make its last lesson a normal lesson. When the last lesson is a quiz, learners are never sent to the sign-off page, so the course stays In progress and no certificate is issued.
  • Courses can't be deleted from the course screens. Archive them instead.
  • Jasper issues a certificate with a serial number when someone completes a course, but nothing in Jasper links to the certificate page yet.
  • SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 and cmi5 import and export aren't linked from the course screens yet.
