Jasper + Slack: alerts in the channel your team already watches
Paste a Slack incoming-webhook address into Jasper and it posts uptime alerts and approved time off to that channel. It is a webhook, not a Slack app: Jasper can post to the channel but cannot read it.
What you can do
- Tell the whole team in Slack when a client site goes down, and again when it recovers.
- Add an SSL or domain monitor for a site to get a warning in Slack 30, 14 and 7 days before its certificate or domain expires.
- Post each approved leave request to a team channel, so everyone knows who is away.
- Send the same uptime alerts as JSON to any other address, for tools that aren't Slack.
What syncs
| Data | Direction | When |
|---|---|---|
| Uptime alerts: down, recovered, degraded, and SSL certificate or domain expiring | Jasper → Slack | When the monitor detects it. One down or degraded alert is sent per incident. |
| Uptime alerts as JSON | Jasper → your address | The same alerts, to the monitor's custom webhook URL. |
| Approved time off: the person's name, the dates and how long | Jasper → Slack | When a request is approved, including automatic approval. Never the leave type or reason. |
| Messages and channels in Slack | Not synced | Jasper cannot read Slack. |
Set up in 4 steps
Who can do this: Uptime alerts: anyone who can edit the monitor. Time-off announcements: owners and admins.
- In Slack, create an app, turn on Incoming Webhooks, click Add New Webhook to Workspace, pick the channel and copy the webhook address.
- For uptime alerts, open the monitor in Jasper's Uptime section, paste the address into Slack Webhook URL and save.
- Click Test Slack on the monitor's edit page to check that a message arrives.
- For approved time off, open the leave settings, tick Announce Approved Time Off to Slack, paste the address and save.
Permissions we ask for, and why
Jasper asks Slack for nothing. A Slack incoming webhook can only post messages to the one channel it was made for: it cannot read messages, list channels or see your workspace.
| Permission | Why Jasper needs it |
|---|---|
Incoming webhook address (one channel) |
Lets Jasper post alerts to that channel. Anyone who has the address can post there, so treat it like a password. |
Your data
- Webhook addresses are stored in Jasper's database with the monitor or your leave settings. They are not encrypted there yet.
- Uptime alerts carry the monitor's name, address and incident details. Time-off messages carry the person's name, the dates and how long they are away.
- To stop alerts, delete the address in Jasper or remove the webhook in Slack.
Our privacy policy covers what we store, where, and for how long.
Limits and what is not synced
- This is not a Slack app. Jasper can't read Slack, reply in threads or use slash commands, and it isn't in the Slack App Directory.
- You can't choose to send your own Jasper notifications to Slack, Microsoft Teams or Discord yet. Personal settings let you save a webhook for each and send a test.
- Uptime alerts are sent once and not retried if Slack is down. Time-off announcements are tried up to three times.
- Every uptime alert type is posted. The Notify When choices and the Enable Notifications switch on a monitor don't change that yet.
- Each monitor has one Slack address, and time-off announcements go to one channel for the organisation.
Common questions
Is there a Jasper Slack app?
No. Jasper posts to Slack through incoming webhooks that you create. It cannot read your Slack workspace.
Does it work with Microsoft Teams or Discord?
Not yet. Personal settings let you save a Teams or Discord webhook and send a test message, but you can't choose to send your notifications there today.
What does a time-off message say?
The person's name, the dates and how long they are away. It never includes the leave type or the reason.
Can different monitors post to different channels?
Yes. Each monitor has its own Slack webhook address.
Can messages from our other tools come into Jasper?
Yes. Tools that post Slack-style webhook messages can post into a Jasper chat channel instead. See Webhooks and API.
Which plan includes these alerts?
Uptime monitoring and leave are on team plans. Talk to us to turn them on.
