Planning time off? The TAS 2027 leave planner finds the days of leave that give the longest breaks around these holidays.

How we count working days

  1. Every day in the range. From the first date to the last, both included.
  2. Your work week. Days you don't normally work (Saturday and Sunday unless you change them) are left out.
  3. Public holidays. A full-day public holiday that applies to everyone in the location is left out when it falls on one of your working days. That includes substitute and additional days given when a holiday falls on a weekend.
  4. Not left out. Part-day holidays (such as 7pm to midnight) are working days. Holidays for part of a state, or for some workers only, are left out only if you tick that option.
  5. Teams. With more than one location, each is counted on its own. Every location works on the days in your work week that are not a holiday anywhere; at least one works on every day that is not a holiday everywhere.

Questions

How do you count working days?

Every day from the first date to the last, both included, that is one of your working days and is not a public holiday where you work. Days you don't work, such as weekends, don't count, and nor do public holidays that fall on them.

Is a business day the same as a working day?

Usually: Monday to Friday, less public holidays. But laws, contracts and banks each define business days in their own way, so for a legal or contract deadline, check how that law or document defines one. Don't use this calculator for court, statutory or contract deadlines.

What happens when a public holiday falls on a weekend?

Many governments give a weekday instead, or as well. In 2027, NSW has an Additional Day on Monday 26 April because Anzac Day is a Sunday; England and Wales have substitute bank holidays on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December for Christmas Day and Boxing Day; and most US federal employees get Friday 18 June off because Juneteenth falls on a Saturday. The calculator uses the dates each government publishes, so these are included.

Are part-day holidays counted?

No. In South Australia and the Northern Territory, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are public holidays from 7pm to midnight, and in Queensland Christmas Eve is a public holiday from 6pm to midnight. You still work that day, so it is a working day. The results list any that fall in your dates.

What about show days and other local holidays?

Some holidays apply only in part of a state or territory, or only to some workers: show days in parts of NSW, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Tasmania, Royal Hobart Regatta in the south of Tasmania, and the August bank holiday in NSW and the ACT, which applies only to some workers. They aren't counted unless you tick the option, and the results list the ones in your dates.

Why does the US have 12 federal holidays in 2027?

New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so the Office of Personnel Management lists Friday 31 December 2027 as the holiday for most federal employees. With the 11 holidays of 2027 itself, that makes 12 in the calendar year. Private employers don't have to give federal holidays: the Fair Labor Standards Act "does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations, sick leave or federal or other holidays".

Can I count hours as well as days?

Yes. Type the hours in a working day and each location's working days are multiplied by it. For example, 21 working days at 7.6 hours a day is 159.6 hours.

Can I use it for a part-time week?

Yes. Untick the days you don't normally work. A public holiday on a day you don't work doesn't change the count.

Which dates does it cover?

From 1 January 2027 to 14 January 2028, the period we have checked against each government's published dates.

Does anything I enter leave my browser?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and saves your settings only in this browser. A share link keeps your settings after the # in the address, and browsers never send that part to a server. "Clear my data" removes what is saved here.
