SonarQube and Jasper: static analysis and AI review

SonarQube is a static analysis platform: rule-based checks in 30+ languages, security reports, an IDE extension and self-hosting. Sonar also sells Gitar, an AI pull request reviewer. Jasper is an AI reviewer for GitHub pull requests inside a team workspace. Many teams run a static analyser and an AI reviewer side by side.

Where SonarQube is better

  • Rule-based checks you can audit line by line, in 30+ languages (45+ on Enterprise). Jasper is not a static analyser.
  • Self-hosting with SonarQube Server, plus a free IDE extension and a CLI.
  • GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps. Jasper reviews GitHub pull requests only.
  • OWASP and MISRA reporting, SSO and SCIM on Enterprise.
  • Gitar, Sonar's AI reviewer, if you want AI review from the same vendor.

Where Jasper is better

  • Conversational review: ask /jasper explain, improve, security, docs, summary or review on the pull request.
  • On team plans, pull requests link to ClickUp tasks, and Jasper can push branch protection rules to GitHub.
  • The review sits in the same workspace as your team's chat, mail and timesheets.

Using SonarQube and Jasper together

  • Run SonarQube for rule-based checks and Jasper for a conversational review. Both report on the pull request.
  • Make both checks required in GitHub branch protection if you want either to block a merge (Jasper's quality gate is on team plans).

SonarQube pricing

SonarQube's Team plan is priced by the lines of private code you analyse; Gitar Core and Pro are priced per user. Public, OSI-licensed open source repositories get SonarQube and Gitar free. Prices are copied as SonarQube's own page showed them to us on 4 Oct 2026; your currency may differ.

Jasper: free to start, with chat and calls, mail in the desktop app, the wiki, staff training, the API client and AI code review with 250 free AI credits a month. Time tracking, leave, the intranet and uptime monitoring are on team plans. See pricing or talk to us.

Adding Jasper next to SonarQube

  1. Keep SonarQube running as it is.
  2. Install the Jasper GitHub App on the repositories you want reviewed.
  3. Tell Jasper what to focus on in its review prompt or an AGENTS.md file, so it does not repeat what SonarQube already checks.
  4. On a team plan, add Jasper's quality gate as a required check next to SonarQube's.

Questions people ask

Is SonarQube free?

Sonar has a free tier for private projects up to 50k lines of code, and free plans for public, OSI-licensed open source projects. The Team plan starts at $34 a month for up to 100k lines of code.

Does Sonar have AI code review?

Yes. Sonar sells Gitar, an AI pull request reviewer, from $20 per user a month billed annually.

Can Jasper replace SonarQube?

Not as a static analyser. Jasper has no rule engine you can audit line by line, no coverage tracking and no self-hosting. Many teams run both.

Which git hosts does Jasper support?

GitHub only. GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps are not supported yet.

Which AI model does Jasper use?

Anthropic's Claude. Jasper keeps a synced copy of each connected repository, so the review can read files beyond the diff.
